Genetic Testing

The Cancer Risk Screening Program (CRiSP) at St. Francis can help identify inherited and early cancer risks, such as breast or ovarian cancer, by looking at your family background and medical history. With families with high risk of developing cancer, their genetic links are researched so that they can gain a better understanding of their risks and treatment choices. The program also offers opportunities for early detection, chemoprevention, and monitoring.

At St. Francis, we offer the support and resources necessary to make difficult medical decisions. CRiSP is a comprehensive program that includes genetic evaluation, testing, counseling, and referrals to health care services. St. Francis is also the only Upstate healthcare provider with a Genetic Consultant who is an Advanced Practice Nurse.

A Genetic Risk Consultant will start your cancer risk assessment by reviewing your biological family background. You could be at high risk if:

  • As determined by your family history, cancer occurs at a younger age than average
  • Cancer occurs in more than one generation
  • More than one type of rare cancer was identified in a close relative
  • Cancer occurs in both breasts, or if breast cancer occurs in a male

Genetic Counseling

If you are considered high risk, then your CRiSP Consultant will provide a confidential consultation, which includes further assessment, screenings, and follow-up appointments as appropriate. She will also guide you through a personalized cancer care plan for your future medical and surgical needs, through potential referrals. In addition to meeting your educational needs, your CRiSP Consultant will help you work through the emotional issues intertwined with difficult medical decisions. She will listen, talk, and get you in touch with people who understand and know how to help, such as the St. Francis Spiritual Care program.
